Postcards From the Falls, Issue 024 - April 2024
The newsletter for all things Brennan LaFaro: A note on the future of Dead Headspace, release month for The Demon of Devil's Cavern, and some work-in-progress updates
For the last four years, it’s been my honor and privilege to be one of the hosts of the Dead Headspace Podcast. Alongside Patrick McDonough, and more recently, Candace Nola, we recorded 240 episodes with a wide-ranging group of horror creators, from the biggest names in the genre to exciting names bursting onto the scene. We always viewed this show as a time capsule of the current state of horror, celebrating and learning from those who came before us, and lifting up those just beginning their journey.
But, to quote Marvel’s Vision, “A thing isn’t beautiful because it lasts.” After four years, we’re putting down the headphones and turning off the microphones to focus on family and our writing careers. I’ve learned so many things from the countless people who generously gave their time and wisdom, and now it’s time to put those ideas to work.
The biggest possible thank you to every artist, author, and storyteller who spent time with us, promoting books, talking craft, or just trying to shed some light on the darkness in the world. We appreciate you more than we can put into words. An equally massive thank you to anyone who’s listened along the way and tuned in just to hang out and have a conversation with friends.
To put it succinctly, you had many choices in podcasts. Thank you for choosing us.
Okay, I need a minute. Alright. Good. Good to go.

Typing this up on April 1st, it’s now officially release month for The Demon of Devil’s Cavern. I continue to be floored by some of the blurbs above, but also early reader response. The way it’s garnering praise from readers who are continuing the journey from Noose and readers who started with this book is extremely gratifying, and I’ll never grow tired of hearing readers who “don’t like westerns” find something to love in these pages.
Recently, I was honored to discover DoDC back at the top of the horror western charts, rubbing elbows with none other than Ronald Kelly, one of the best to ever do it. Ron has become a friend and something of a mentor, so I can’t even begin to describe what an amazing moment this was. Speaking of Ron, if you haven’t read his Saga of Dead-Eye series, you best get on it.
The Demon of Devil’s Cavern releases on April 20th. You can preorder here and get it the morning it comes out, or add to Goodreads by clicking here.
I’ll be bringing back OUT OF THE SHADOWS with the next newsletter, but I’ll leave you with some work-in-progress details.
I’ve finished tightening the screws on this collection of western stories due out in the fall, and now it’s off to the editor. I opted to cast aside the original title (Last Train to Buzzard’s Edge) in favor of Where the Daybreak Ends: Stories From Buzzard’s Edge. It’s a little over 60,000 words and has some of my favorite short fiction I’ve written between the covers. More news on that coming soon.
Between writing short stories and finishing the collection, that was pretty much March. The first draft of my novel Daisy has been waiting patiently while my brain tries to make connections and fix the unseemly aspects in its runtime, but with April here and four weeks of distance? It’s time to head back to Mill Creek, NH and get this thing in fighting shape.
Wish me luck.
